Nigel de Jong has ended speculation concerning his future by signing a contract extension with AC Milan through to June 30th, 2018. The former Ajax midfielder had been subject to transfer speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United that would have seen him reunited with head coach Louis van Gaal, following the pair’s collaboration during the Netherlands’ 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign last summer.
Despite the Italian giants going through a troubled rebuilding phase, which saw them finish a lowly tenth in Serie A last season, de Jong has continued to put in strong performances for the Rossoneri, though he had largely been played out of position by former head coach, Filippo Inzaghi. The tough-tackling midfielder posted a total of 99 interceptions during his past two seasons in Serie A, the most of any midfielder (as per Opta).
