Ajax have confirmed the signing of John Heitinga with the defender signing a one-year-deal in Amsterdam.

Heitinga was available on a free transfer after leaving Hertha Berlin at the end of the season and has decided on a return to Ajax, with the 31-year-old signing a one-year-deal which includes the option of an extra year.
The defender originally joined Ajax’s youth academy at the age of seven, and went on to make 152 league appearances for the club before leaving to join Atletico Madrid in 2008. Spells with Everton, Fulham and Hertha Berlin have followed, but Heitinga is now back in Amsterdam to add much needed experience to Frank de Boer’s side.
Heitinga joins as a replacement for Niklas Moisander, who left for Italian side Sampdoria at the end of the season.
