viergever asIt was the visitors who started the match brightly, with Johann Gudmundsson having a deflected effort saved after 19 minutes.

Zwolle’s first chance came after 30 minutes, when Stef Nijland saw his free-kick brilliantly saved by Esteban.

It was AZ who took the lead on 37 minutes, when a Maarten Martens free kick was swung into the box, and Joost Broerse could only head it into his own goal.

The lead was doubled five minutes into the second half, when a corner was headed in at the near post by Nick Viergever.

Nijland wasted another free-kick for the home side, firing well over from just outside the box when Fred Benson had been fouled, as Zwolle failed to find their rhythm.

AZ continued to push forward, and Roy Beerens saw an effort saved, before substitute Steven Berghuis put a fantastic chance wide in the final minute.

A disappointing result for the home side who could not build on their 6-1 hammering of ADO Den Haag last week, while AZ continue their good form under Dick Advocaat, climbing to 3rd in the table before the Vitesse v Groningen result.
