PEC Zwolle went into the game unbeaten on their own ground for eight months, but that record was smashed after an excellent performance from Vitesse.
After seven minutes Vitesse had the lead through a Lewis Baker free kick which caught Mickey van der Hart by surprise, but PEC Zwolle equalised eight minutes later when Thomas Lam fired in from close range.
On 21 minutes Lam went from hero to zero after he handled in the box and Dominik Solanke slotted in a penalty to restore Vitesse’s lead, which was extended before the break through Valeri Qazaishvili. The Georgian’s shot into the ground looped into the top corner past a hapless Van der Hart.
Seven minutes into the second half any chance of a PEC Zwolle comeback was killed when Ouasim Bouy brought down Denys Oliynyk in the box, earning the midfielder a red card. Oliynyk converted the resulting penalty to make it 4-1.
Kingsley Ehizibue hit the bar for PEC Zwolle, but before the end Milot Rashica, who was excellent throughout the game, completed the rout.
Vitesse move level on points with PEC Zwolle, but climb to fifth thanks to superior goal difference.
