Steven Berghuis netted a double to earn Feyenoord a 2-2 draw at PEC Zwolle which keeps the Rotterdammers clear at the top.

The league leaders going into the game on the back of the 8-0 demolition of Go Ahead Eagles on Wednesday were forced into an unwanted change before kick off with Nicolai Jorgensen dropped from the starting line-up in place of Dirk Kuyt.

After only three minutes disaster struck for Feyenoord with Queensy Menig racing onto a through ball before rounding Brad Jones, who had come a long way out his goal, and slotting into an empty net. The on-loan Ajax winger missed a similar chance in midweek but made no mistake this time round. Ten minutes later Feyenoord were caught out again, this time Bram van Polen got in behind the Rotterdammers defence before slotting into the net to put the home side up 2-0.

Only a last ditch Eric Botteghin challenge prevented Menig getting through on goal again and from that point the visitors began to get a grip on the game. On 26 minutes, Steven Berghuis pulled a goal back with a low strike which Mickey van der Hart got a hand too but couldn’t stop the ball finishing in the bottom corner.

From that point, Feyenoord pushed looking for an equaliser which they eventually found on 54 minutes and it was Berghuis again who cut in from the right before drilling the ball into the corner.

Feyenoord then had half an hour to find a winner but they couldn’t find a way through van der Hart, who denied Kuyt and substitute Michiel Kramer, while Jens Toornstra couldn’t finish from close range. At the end PEC Zwolle could have nicked the three points but Jones pushed Stef Nijland’s shot wide.

The point keeps Feyenoord one ahead of Ajax in second with four games to go, while PEC Zwolle are 12th.
