Ten-man Feyenoord will have to battle it out in the end of season play-offs for a place in Europe after a 3-0 defeat to PEC Zwolle left them finishing fourth.

vilfeypecGoing into the final game of the season, Feyenoord knew they only had to beat PEC Zwolle to claim third and a place in the Europa League. However the pressure from the stands as AZ Alkmaar raced into a 2-0 lead over Excelsior made its way onto the pitch as Feyenoord barely troubled Warner Hahn in a tepid first half.

After the break everything began to fall apart for Feyenoord as Ben Rienstra was set up by Ryan Thomas and the midfielder excellently beat Kenneth Vermeer to put PEC Zwolle 1-0 up after 52 minutes.

Feyenoord’s chances of finishing third were then ended on 75 minutes when right back Rick Karsdorp was sent off for bringing down Thomas in the box, and Tomas Necid netted from the spot. The big Czech striker then completed the rout in the final minute by adding the third.

Both sides will now enter the end of season play-offs with Feyenoord facing Heerenveen and PEC Zwolle battling Vitesse. The big question will be whether Fred Rutten will still be in charge by the time Feyenoord face Heerenveen, with reports the coach could resign in the next few days after the clubs terrible form recently.
