Last week, PEC Zwolle sacked John Stegeman after the defeat to Emmen, with Leeroy Echteld taking charge for the clash with Heerenveen on Friday.
Echteld watched as Heerenveen began on the front foot and Henk Veerman was unlucky to see a strike come back off the post. In the 27th minute, Mitchell van Bergen made it 1-0 with a volley that flew under Xavier Mous.
Heerenveen were on top in the first-half, but after the break, PEC Zwolle were much better. In the 52nd minute, Virgil Misidjan fired in the equaliser. The winger then set up Thomas Buitink to make it 2-1 in the 70th minute.
Heerenveen then collapsed with Bram van Polen heading in a third from a free-kick before Eliano Reijnders added a fourth late on.
PEC Zwolle end a run of poor form and the win moves them to 12th, while Heerenveen are 10th. The Frisians must now prepare for the KNVB Cup semi-final against Ajax next week.
