The 22-year-old has yet to make his debut in the Eredivisie after joining AZ from Red Star Belgrade in 2013, but has scored eight times in 10 games for the clubs reserve side this season.
Babalj is an Australian international, who will reinforce the attack of PEC Zwolle after they lost Tomas Necid earlier this month. PEC Zwolle have the option to buy the striker at the end of the loan.
PEC Zwolle technical director Gerard Nijkamp told the clubs official site, “Babalj came to Netherlands a few years back as a great talent. Only he currently sits at a dead end at AZ.”
“Eli was high on our summer wish list, but a transition did not happen then. I am happy that the club now managed to contract him, because I expect that he can be of value to us.”
Babalj has two caps for Australia’s national team, scoring two goals.
