PEC Zwolle went into the game in 16th and only three points above ADO Den Haag. They could not afford another loss against Vitesse.
The home side got off to the perfect start in the fifth minute as Gustavo Hamer found the net with a strike into the far corner. However, a minute later, Vitesse were level as Tim Matavz capitalised on an error in the PEC Zwolle defence to equalise.
In the 33rd minute, Vitesse made it 2-1 as Oussama Tannane found the top corner with an excellent strike.
PEC Zwolle went looking for the equaliser in the second half but substitute Reza Ghoochenejad missed a huge chance in front of goal on the hour mark.
Kenneth Paal made up for that error with 15 minutes to go before Reza scored from the spot to make it 3-2 in the 90th minute after a handball.
That kicked off a crazy last few minutes as Tannane equalised in the 92nd minute, only for Pelle Clement to immediately score from a corner at the other end to make it 4-3 and win it for PEC Zwolle.
The victory moves PEC Zwolle above Fortuna Sittard into 15th while Vitesse sits seventh.
