With Ajax leading 1-0 going into the final minute, Mario Balotelli went down in the box after a tussle with substitute Mike van der Hoorn, and was awarded a penalty, which the Italian converted.
The penalty award has come under much scrutiny, with replays showing that Balotelli actually dragged the big defender to the ground in an action Ajax coach Frank de Boer described as a “judo move”.
Now the club have confirmed that failing to see out the win, and conceding the controversial penalty has cost the club thousands of Euros.
Ajax financial director Jeoren Slop told NRC Handelsblad, “The 93 minutes cost us five hundred thousand euros, half a million, that sounds worse.”
The Amsterdam club sit third in their Champions League group after a draw, and a defeat, with back to back matches against Celtic to come.
