The heroic 0-0 draw in Eindhoven had given PSV a slim glitter of hope heading into the second leg in Madrid, with Phillip Cocu hoping his 5-3-2 formation could frustrate Atletico Madrid and allow his side to hit on the counter attack.
In the first half PSV struggled to maintain possession but whenever Atletico breached the Dutch side’s back four, Jeroen Zoet was on hand to deny the Spaniards. The goalkeeper saved well from Griezmann twice as PSV reached the break unscathed.
After the break it was PSV who came closest to breaking the deadlock with Jurgen Locadia’s shot tipped onto the post before Luuk de Jong’s header on the rebound was blocked on the line. At the other end Zoet denied Griezmann again, and was on hand to push away a late effort from Fernando Torres as the game limped to extra time.
In the extra half hour PSV defended resolutely but late on Andres Guardado could have sealed victory, but after a good team move his chip landed over the bar. PSV’s defensive effort gained them a chance at penalties, and a place in the quarter finals was just in reach.
However, after seven successful penalties each, Luciano Narsingh, who was a late substitute for Luuk de Jong, smashed his spot kick onto the crossbar and Juanfran secured Atletico’s place in the last eight.
Absolute heartbreak for PSV, who now have to pick themselves up for the visit of Ajax to Eindhoven on Sunday in a crucial game in the Eredivisie title race.
It was amazing… I’m proud ! PSV played like the big team we are. It’s sad to have lost, but, have to keep the focus, sunday we have a very important game.
Cocu was very smart in the lineup and everybody gave their best, this is the important.
Let me begin by saying I am a Real Madrid fan, living in Madrid and desperately wanted PSV to beat Atletico. That was until I saw the way the PSV fans behaved in our city. Throwing coins on the ground at the homeless so they would go on their hands and knees to retrieve said coins, all while being heckled and chanted at. This was pathetic to witness as was the way they left the beautiful plaza mayor, full of garbage and broken bottles before being escorted out by the police force (who was too nice to these supporters in my opinion) Anyway, now I am glad that PSV lost and even happier that karma served you all an 8-7 penalty kick loss. HAHAHA now go back home and flood your streets with garbage and kick your homeless while they’re down….. o wait, you would never do that in your own country….. please dont come back!
