The winger completed his move to Tottenham from PSV earlier in the week and immediately found himself in the starting line-up.
Manchester City dominated the first half but Sergio Aguero hit the post, while Hugo Lloris saved a Ilkay Gündogan penalty.
It seemed only a matter of time before the visitors took the lead but in the 60th minute, former PSV loanee Oleksandr Zinchenko was sent off for his second yellow card.
Three minutes later, Tottenham broke the deadlock and it was Bergwijn who found the net with a lovely strike after controlling the ball on his chest.
The Dutchman was then replaced by Erik Lamela before Son Heung-Min settled the victory in the 71st minute.
Tottenham are now fifth after the victory while Manchester City fall further behind leaders Liverpool.
