Both teams struggled in the heat early on in the game and the first chance didn’t appear until after the half-hour mark with Javairo Dilrosun testing the German goalkeeper after a fine run.
A minute into the second half, Germany took the lead through Aymen Barkok, who took advantage of poor defending to net unmarked at the back post. However, the lead only lasted three minutes before Dilrosun’s cross picked out Joel Piroe, who headed in from close range.
With 25 minutes to go, Netherlands took the lead with Ferdi Kadioglu’s corner headed towards goal by Dani de Wit and deflected into the net by Piroe. The PSV striker then completed his hat-trick with a fine finish on 79 minutes after being played through by Dilrosun. With moments to go, Dilrosun’s clever backheel set Jay-Roy Grot free and the NEC striker rifled the ball into the top corner.
It’s the perfect start to the tournament for Netherlands who jump to the top of the group. Oranje now face England, who beat Bulgaria 2-0, on Thursday.
