Liverpool and Manchester United handed a boost in pursuit of PSV’s golden boy as the French giants have moved on to other targets.

Depay is one of the hottest prospects of the upcoming transfer window, and it looks like two Premier League giants are the only two left chasing his signature. A major presence in PSV winning their first Eredivisie title in 8 seasons, Depay is the league’s highest scorer with 21 goals in 28 appearances.

With a host of interest clubs hitting the gossip columns, the three with the most solid interest were Manchester United, who’s coach Louis Van Gaal has close ties to Depay, Liverpool, and PSG. However, it now seems that PSG have dropped the young winger from their list of potential new signings. Rumor is, they have financial fair play constraints, and thus will focus their summer on one major central striker – with current striker Edinson Cavani rumored to be courted by many major clubs as well. Liverpool and Manchester United have both had mixed seasons, and are currently the two teams battling for the coveted 4th Premier League spot, which means the prestige and economic assurance of Champion’s League football. With 3 games left, Manchester United currently have a 4 point advantage over Liverpool.

Louis Van Gaal has said he misses, “an attacker who scores many goals.,” and given current form, Depay would likely fill that void once he adapted to play in England. Brendan Rodgers has already promised an upheaval this summer, and should Raheem Sterling leave the club, Rodgers may need to spend the extra dollars to secure the Dutchman. Depay will no doubt wish to play Champions League football next year, and will find it hard to leave PSV, who have qualified for next year, for a team playing in the less prestigious Europa League.

I'm a digital/social marketer out of Chicago. I grew up loving Dutch football - total football is the only way to play. I support PSV in the Eredivisie, and whatever team has the most Dutch guys on it in any other league. Hup Holland Hup!
