PSV struggled to a slim 1-0 win over bottom of the table Go Ahead Eagles in the Philips Stadion.

de-jongs-psvAfter the consecutive 0-0 draws with Roda JC and Rostov, PSV’s fans will have been expecting a big response from their players against a struggling Go Ahead side. However, the crowd once again saw a lifeless PSV in action, who were sloppy in possession and uninspired in attack.

PSV did create some opportunities in the first half, but Davy Propper’s effort was blocked, while Bart Ramselaar’s shot came back off the post.

After the break, the home fans were restless and they let their frustrations known with whistles aimed at Phillip Cocu when he decided to switch Gaston Pereiro with Siem de Jong. However, the change proved to be a masterstroke as the midfielder tapped in Joshua Brenet’s cross to break the deadlock on 68 minutes.

Towards the end Steven Bergwijn could have made it 2-0 but his curling effort from the edge of the box was well tipped over by Theo Zwarthoed. Go Ahead couldn’t threaten a comeback before the end as PSV held on for a precious and much-needed win.

The victory moves PSV three points behind the top two, while Go Ahead remain bottom.
