Marco van Ginkel sealed his return to Eindhoven on loan during the winter break and he showed PSV fans what they had been missing during the past six months when he broke the deadlock on 34 minutes. The Chelsea loanee latched onto Bart Ramselaar’s lay-off before firing past Warner Hahn.
The opening goal had been coming for the home side who laid siege to the Excelsior defence in the opening half hour. Ramselaar had already hit the post, while Luuk de Jong and Andres Guardado were both denied by Hahn.
Just before the hour mark, it was 2-0 with Guardado floating an excellent ball to Davy Propper on the edge of the box and the midfielder calmly beat Hahn.
De Jong should have made it 3-0 before the end but after racing through on goal the striker blasted comically over the bar. The miss had no impact on the result as PSV started 2017 with a win. They remain third, while Excelsior are 15th.
