It could have been a nervous evening in the Phillips Stadion, but PSV quickly took the lead to settle the crowd with Davy Propper firing Santiago Arias pass into the top corner.
PSV maintained control after the opener but a brilliant chance presented itself to Milot Rachica on the hour mark, but the Vitesse attacker was denied by an excellent block from Jeffrey Bruma.
Substitute Maxime Lestienne then earned PSV Eindhoven a soft penalty on 70 minutes after going down in the box from a Kevin Diks challenge. Luuk de Jong slotted in the spot-kick to seal a simple victory for Phillip Cocu’s side.
The win means PSV go top and three points ahead of Ajax, who face a potentially tricky trip to Heerenveen on Wednesday. Vitesse stay eighth.
