PSV went into the game brimming with confidence after holding Manchester United in the Champions League midweek and after only three they were ahead against AZ with Derick Luckassen working a corner into his own goal.
On 15 minutes it was 2-0 with Luuk de Jong heading in a perfect cross from Joshua Brenet, and AZ Alkmaar seemed powerless to prevent a hammering just days after their hapless exit from the Europa League.
Gaston Pereiro was denied PSV’s third goal, firstly by goalkeeper Coutinho and then a few minutes later by the linesman’s flag. Just before the break the Uruguayan did provide an assist for De Jong though, who netted his thirteenth goal of the season.
Fifteen minutes after the break Luckassen was shown a straight red card for lashing out at De Jong, but despite the man advantage PSV failed to add any further goals. Coutinho denied Locadia’s free kick with a fingertip save, while Brenet sent a thunderous strike off the bar.
PSV remain third and four points off top spot, while AZ slip to 10th.
