New PSV Eindhoven head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has confirmed the club are close to confirming the signing of Walter Benitez as their new number one goalkeeper.

Benitez is available on a free transfer after leaving OGC Nice and he will sign for PSV Eindhoven as soon as he completes his medical examination.

Van Nistelrooy confirmed at his press conference on Monday that Benitez was in Eindhoven to undergo his medical, “The priority was in goal. Benítez is here and is being tested. He is an all-round goalkeeper at a very high level. Hopefully we get the green light soon. That’s fantastic.”

The arrival of Benitez doesn’t mean Joel Drommel has to go, “I spoke to Joël and said: you are a big purchase and we will absolutely not write you off. He is not yet where we would like to see him as absolute number one, he understands that himself. But given his age, we can still get a lot out of that and we’ll get to work on that.”

PSV also confirmed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Boy Waterman on Monday with the 38-year-old signed to be the club’s third goalkeeper.
