PSV Eindhoven is now top of the table after a 2-1 victory over Ajax in Amsterdam.

Both teams went into the game after victories in Europe in midweek with Ajax once again lining up without Daley Blind. Devyne Rensch was preferred at left-back. PSV kept Noni Madueke on the bench as Xavi Simons played on the right wing.

Ajax controlled the ball in the early stages but in the 20th minute, PSV had the lead with Cody Gakpo swinging in a cross for Luuk de Jong to slide the ball into the net.

The game turned feisty with Edson Alvarez and Armando Obispo both seeing yellow after handbags in the midfield. Before the break, Ajax came close to an equaliser but Mohammed Kudus hit the post.

Five minutes into the second half, PSV doubled their lead as Erick Gutierrez rammed the ball past Remko Pasveer after the ball dropped at his feet.

Walter Benitez was called into action to deny Alvarez but PSV remained threatening on the counter. Simons got through on the hour and was awarded a penalty after going down under the challenge of Rensch. However, the decision was reversed after intervention from VAR.

Substitute Anwar El Ghazi also hit the crossbar with a free-kick as PSV threatened a third. The home crowd turned on Alfred Schreuder, who decided to take off Dusan Tadic for tall striker Lorenzo Lucca.

The Italian did pull one back almost immediately with an acrobatic finish but there was to be no equaliser as Benitez denied Alvarez.

PSV wins and goes top, but Ajax does have a game in hand.
