After the 1-0 defeat in Eindhoven last week PSV always faced an uphill task in Russia, and Zenit once again proved too strong for the Eredivisie leaders.
PSV started the match well and after 20 minutes Luuk de Jong thought he had given his side the lead, only for his header to be ruled out as Adam Maher’s corner was adjudged to have gone out of play. Ten minutes later Zenit had the lead as Jeffrey Bruma was caught ball watching and Solomon Rondon swept Danny’s cross past Jeroen Zoet.
Danny and Ezequil Garay missed good chances for Zenit, but three minutes into the second half Hulk raced through Andres Guardado and Adam Maher before hammering a shot into the top corner.
PSV were handed a lifeline when Zenit were penalised for handball in the box, but Luuk de Jong’s penalty was saved by Lodygin, and soon after Rondon added his second of the game on the rebound to kill the tie.
Phillip Cocu’s side exit Europe, but they can all but wrap up the Eredivisie title against Ajax on Sunday.
