makkeliePSV have been fined €7,500 and handed a suspended one game ban on fans travelling to an away game after fans abused referee Danny Makkelie.

The incident took place during the Eindhoven clubs away victory at Excelsior in September, Makkelie was accused of being an “Amsterdam whore” after seeming to have made some decisions the fans did not agree with.

Harrie Timmermans, President of the supporters club of PSV, tried to downplay the incident. “Makkelie stuck his thumb up to the fans and we reacted.” Timmermans continued “Moments later he made a cynical applause, that cannot be correct of an official.”

PSV have accepted the punishment and took a different view to the supporters club. “This does not fit within the core values of PSV” said club general manager Toon Gerbrands. “We accept the sanction of the KNVB. I am counting on our fans, who usually provide the team with great support to realize that this can not be the correct way to behave.”

PSV resume their league campaign in an away fixture against Willem this weekend.
