With Ajax playing Roda JC on Sunday, Phillip Cocu’s side knew a win over the bottom side would put them top, and PSV seemed on course to an easy win when they went into half time 3-0 up.
Luuk de Jong opened the scoring after 17 minutes, when he followed up on the rebound after his own initial shot had been saved by Hidde Jurjus. Just after the half hour mark Davy Propper curled the ball into the bottom corner from outside the box to make it 2-0
PSV were then rewarded a penalty when Luuk de Jong was adjudged to have been pulled down, but the out of form Jurgen Locadia’s spot kicked was stopped by Jurjus. Despite the miss PSV quickly made it 3-0 with Luciano Narsingh curling into the top corner.
De Graafschap may have feared they were on the way to a hammering in the second half, but PSV took their eye off the ball, and the visitors mounted a comeback. Firstly on 68 minutes Ted van de Pavert pulled one back, before Bart Straalman made the Philips Stadion a nervous place with ten minutes to go.
However those nerves were ended by substitute Gaston Pereiro, who showed great composure in the box to round Jurjus and fire in PSV’s 4th.
The win puts the champions back on top, while De Graafschap remain rooted to the bottom.
