PSV Eindhoven are out of Europe despite defeating Sevilla 2-0 on Thursday. The Spanish side progressed 3-2 on aggregate.

Down 3-0 from the first leg, PSV knew they had a mountain to climb and Ruud van Nistelrooy was hoping for a quick start. However, he did not get it as Sevilla frustrated the hosts in the first half.

PSV’s attack had little idea on how to break down a stubborn Sevilla side, who nearly took the lead early in the second half through Youssef En-Nesyri.

Just after the hour mark, Fabio Silva and Mauro Junior came on and PSV finally started to create chances. However, Sevilla also hit the bar through Ivan Rakitic.

Johan Bakayoko then went close before Luuk de Jong did make it 1-0 in the 77th minute with a close-range finish. The striker had the ball in the net soon after but this time it was disallowed for an offside in the build-up.

In the final phase, the game was stopped for a while, because goalkeeper Dmitrovic was attacked by a PSV fan. When the game resumed, Silva made it 2-0 but it was too late for PSV, who couldn’t find the third.

PSV are now out of Europe.
