With Ajax drawing 3-3 with Emmen earlier on Saturday, PSV knew a win would move them clear of their rivals. Xavi Simons, Cody Gakpo, and Luuk de Jong all started a day after being named in the Netherlands World Cup squad.
However, AZ took the lead in the 18th minute when Vangelis Pavlidis capitalised on a bad pass from Joey Veerman to fire the visitors in front.
PSV looked for an equaliser before the break but Gakpo headed wide, while Erick Gutierrez hit the post. At the other end, Tijjani Reijnders also hit the woodwork for AZ.
Early in the second half, Gakpo did have the ball in the net but it was eventually ruled out by VAR after it was noticed that substitute Anwar El Ghazi was offside in the build-up.
PSV created chances to equalise before the end, but AZ managed to hold on to a well-earned three points. PSV slips below Ajax on goal difference, while AZ is still in 4th.
