PSV Eindhoven’s European campaign is over after a crushing 4-0 defeat to Sporting club de Portugal.

PSV headed to Lisbon needing at least a draw while also hoping that Rosenborg could do them a favour against LASK Linz. However, PSV did not rise to the occasion against Sporting and they were soundly beaten.

After nine minutes, Luiz Phellype headed the hosts in front before Bruno Fernandes made it 2-0 with an excellent low strike from distance.

A Bruma strike that went wide was the only chance that PSV could muster and in the 42nd minute, Jeremy Mathieu made it 3-0 with a fierce strike.

Mark van Bommel threw on Gastón Pereiro and Cody Gakpo but they couldn’t help PSV fight back. Eventually, Sporting made it 4-0 through a Fernandes penalty after a foul by Timo Baumsgartl.

The defeat coupled with LASK Linz’s win over Rosenborg mean that PSV are now out of Europe. It’s another blow for the club, who are also well behind Ajax in the title race.
