Jean-Paul De Jong went into the game still unbeaten in eight games in charge of Utrecht and his side started brightly in Eindhoven. Sander van de Streek forced Jeroen Zoet into a good save before Mark van der Maarel hit the post.
On 16 minutes, PSV took the lead against the run of play with Bart Ramselaar’s cross deflected into his own net by Ramon Leeuwin. Five minutes later it was 2-0 with Santiago Arias sending in a cross for Luuk de Jong to find the net with a spectacular overhead kick.
PSV were then awarded a penalty by Kevin Blom for a push on Gaston Pereiro, but after talking with his assistant the decision was reversed and the Uruguayan booked. Before the break, Utrecht should have cut the lead but Van de Streek couldn’t hit the target with a low strike.
Any chance of a Utrecht comeback was ended early in the second half when Arias played through Steven Bergwijn, who pushed the ball past Sean Klaiber, before racing in on goal and calmly slotting the ball into the net.
PSV then comfortably saw out the game to seal the three points and move ten points ahead of Ajax, who play on Sunday. Utrecht sit 4th.
