After Ajax’s 1-0 loss at Heracles on Saturday, PSV turned up in Utrecht looking to move eight points clear. They had won their last 12 meetings with Utrecht and were boosted by the return to fitness of Hirving Lozano and Steven Bergwijn.
However, Utrecht, who were without the suspended Urby Emanuelson and Riechedly Bazoer, hadn’t read the script and they took the lead after only seven minutes. A corner was headed in by Sander van de Streek.
PSV looked for an equaliser but Lozano and Pablo Rosario sent decent heading chances wide, while David Jensen tipped over a Gaston Pereiro effort. Luuk de Jong was also denied a penalty after having his shirt pulled in the box by Timo Letschert.
In the 38th minute, Mark van Bommel was left furious when Utrecht netted a second goal on the break through Gyrano Kerk. The PSV boss thought Lozano was brought down but the referee waved play on and the ball was played over the top to Kerk who raced into the box before firing low past Jeroen Zoet.
PSV’s struggles continued into the second half but just before the hour mark they pulled one back. Bergwijn played De Jong in on goal and his shot trickled past Jensen and into the net.
PSV then laid siege to the Utrecht box in search of an equaliser. Bergwijn saw a shot just tipped wide by Jensen while substitute Mohammed Ihattaren fired inches past the post.
With four minutes left the equaliser did come as De Jong slid the ball into the net after Dumfries burst into the box and crossed for the forward.
In the last minute, Utrecht thought they had earned a penalty when Dumfries slipped in the box before taking down Simon Gustafson. However, referee Pol van Boekel waved away the appeals despite checking VAR.
PSV poured forward in injury time but there was to be no winner and they had to settle for a point.
PSV move six points clear of Ajax while Utrecht are 6th.
