PSV Eindhoven have parted ways with head coach Mark van Bommel after a poor string of results.

The former PSV midfielder was appointed the club’s manager in the summer of 2018. He kept up with Ajax last season but fell just short in the title race, while they were eliminated from the Champions League group stages.

This season, they were knocked out of the Champions League in the qualifying rounds by Basel, and despite an excellent start in the league, their form has dipped rapidly.

PSV find themselves out of the Europa League and currently sitting fourth in the Eredivisie, ten points behind leaders Ajax.

On Sunday, PSV lost 3-1 to Feyenoord, which was the final straw for the club’s hierarchy. Van Bommel has been sacked with immediate effect.

PSV director Toon Gerbrands said on the club’s website, “The decline is too large and unworthy of PSV.

“The competitions are the measuring moments, but the process around them is also decisive. We monitor this intensively. PSV is a club where we try to help and support each other. That has also been the case in recent months. The club interest has always been paramount. The evaluation ultimately resulted in this painful decision. We have all done everything to turn the tide. Unfortunately, we did not succeed. ”
