Phillip Cocu rung the changes from the side that beat Roda JC in the cup midweek, with Luuk de Jong, Andres Guardado and Hector Moreno all coming back into the starting line up.
The Eredivisie champions dominated from the start and after missed chances for De Jong and Gaston Pereiro, it was Luciano Narsingh who opened the scoring on 13 minutes after a brilliant cross from Bart Ramselaar. However, five minutes later Excelsior were awarded a penalty for a foul by Jetro Willems on Kevin Vermeulen and Luigi Bruins sent Jeroen Zoet the wrong way to draw the hosts level.
PSV pushed for the lead before the break with Pereiro denied by Tom Muyters before De Jong hit the post. Eventually the pressure proved too much with De Jong finishing a free kick from Guardado in first half stoppage time to restore PSV’s lead.
In the second half PSV continued to dominate possession and Davy Propper put the game to bed with a strike at the back post which was deflected over the line by Hicham Faik. Before the end Siem de Jong was brought on for his Eredivisie debut and for the first time played alongside his brother Luuk.
The victory sees PSV in third spot while Excelsior are 8th.
