A strong PSV side headed to the Stadium of Light in England, with the likes of Kenneth Paal and Steven Bergwijn starting. After a strong start from the home side it was Bergwijn who had the game’s first chance, but after some great footwork the winger fired into the side netting.
PSV confidently knocked the ball around without really testing their opponents, but ten minutes into the second half Clint Leemans fired a strike into the bottom corner to break the deadlock.
Sunderland pressed for an equaliser, but Rees Greenwood fired wide from 12 yards and PSV eventually held on thanks to some excellent defending, and good goalkeeping from Yanick van Osch.
