PSV Eindhoven could lose top spot in the Eredivisie after they were held to a shock 1-1 draw at home to Heerenveen.

psv l heeSaturday was the start of a massive eight days for PSV, with Heerenveen the start of three games that includes the second leg of their Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid and the visit of title rivals Ajax.

Phillip Cocu decided to name his strongest line-up possible for the tie with Heerenveen, but PSV never got going in the first half with Marco van Ginkel firing their only real chance over. At the other end Jeroen Zoet was called into action to deny both Sam Larsson and Mitchell Te Vrede as the visitors took the upper hand.

On 53 minutes the Philips Stadion fell silent as Heerenveen took the lead. Larsson sent Te Vrede through on goal with an excellent pass and the striker’s shot looped off Zoet and into the net. However, PSV quickly equalised as Luuk de Jong powered a header past Erwin Mulder from close range.

PSV threw everything at Heerenveen with Mulder denying Van Ginkel, and Gaston Pereiro sending the rebound wide. Maxime Lestienne’s pace got the winger into some good positions late on but the winner never came.

Ajax face NEC at home on Sunday and a win would send the Amsterdam side to the top of the league ahead of the massive clash next week. Heerenveen sit 12th.
