PSV Eindhoven’s win over PEC Zwolle on Friday meant that the Eredivisie title was theirs if Heracles could record victory over Ajax.
TheĀ first half was typical of Ajax this season, and showed why the title race has been a one horse race for most of the season. Ajax were laboured and failed to create any clear cut chances early on, and it was relegation threatened Heracles who had the best opportunities through Wout Weghorst and Brahim Darri, who both forced saves from Jasper Cillessen.
However out of nowhere Ajax had the lead on the stroke of half time when Ricardo van Rhijn’s long range free kick was parried by Bram Castro and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson finished the rebound.
In the second half Denni Avdic sent a header off target for Heracles, while Daley Sinkgraven hammered a long range strike just wide. Ajax sealed the win late on with Lucas Andersen showing the only piece of quality in the match by curling a terrific strike into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Heracles remain a place above the bottom three, while Ajax postpone PSV’s title for another week, although a win over Heerenveen next week will seal the league for the Eindhoven side.
