red ndThe Eredivisie champions faced an uphill task before the game, after last weeks crushing 3-0 defeat in the Amsterdam Arena, and things didn’t improve in Austria for Ajax.

Salzburg were by far the better team from the start, and should have been ahead at half time, with Jonathan Soriano unlucky to see an effort come back of the post.

Ten minutes into the second half the home side were finally ahead, as Mike van der Hoorn’s attempted clearance wasn’t held by keeper Jasper Cillessen, and bounced into the net.

It was 2-0 after the hour mark when Sadio Mane easily ran onto a through ball before slotting the ball through Cillessen’s legs.

On 77 minutes a swift counter on the left hand side ended with Mane sending the ball across the goal, and into the path of Soriano, who tapped into the net for the 3rd goal.

Davy Klaassen pulled a goal back in the last 10 minutes with a deflected effort which looped into the net via the crossbar, but it was nothing more than a consolation, and the full time whistle called time on Ajax’s short spell in the competition.

Ajax will now compete for the league and KNVB Cup double, but Frank de Boer will be disappointed that a European campaign that showed promise at times, ended with such a whimper. Ajax were excellent at times in the Champions League, but were totally outclassed in both legs by a determined Salzburg side.
