Groningen’s success this season has been built on having a tight defence but against RKC Waalwijk they found themselves 2-0 down within 15 minutes.
In the fifth minute, Ko Itakura gave the ball away to Anas Tahiri, who then fed Thijs Oosting to net. Ten minutes later, Oosting intercepted a pass from Bart van Hintum before firing past Sergio Padt.
The home side were superior but in the 33rd minute, Groningen pulled one back through Ahmed El Messaoudi, who found the net with a lovely finish.
Groningen remained in the game through Padt in the second half and they should have equalised but Kian Slor hit the post from close range.
Four minutes from time, Sylla Sow sealed the victory for RKC and the three points means they are now five ahead of the drop zone in 14th spot. Groningen remains sixth.
