Robben hung up his boots at the end of last season after his contract with Bayern Munich ended, but the 36-year-old has always hinted since that he could make a return.
Now it has happened, with Robben rejoining his boyhood club Groningen on a one-year contract.
On the club’s website, Robben said, “It started to itch and now it’s my mission. I’m working on a comeback as a footballer. I don’t know yet whether this will work. What I do know is that it will not depend on my commitment and motivation. It is now my dream to play in the shirt of FC Groningen again.”
Robben will hold a press conference on Sunday to discuss his plans for the return.
Groningen was Robben’s first club, with the winger making 52 appearances for the club before having spells with PSV Eindhoven, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
