Robben is entering the final year of his existing three-year contract in Munich, but Bayern are considering an extension to prevent him leaving for free next summer.
Robben’s playing time has been limited for most of the 2015-2016 season only featuring fifteen times due to persistent battles with both hip and groin injuries. However, Robben has still been in impressive form when fit, contributing nine goals and three assists, and is seen as an important component of the Bayern side. Bayern’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told football magazine kicker “I do not rule out that both (Robben & Ribery) will sign renewals with Bayern, we all know how incredibly important they are, both on and off the pitch.”
Robben signed for Bayern Munich in 2009 from Real Madrid for around €25 million and has helped the Bavarians win the Champions League in 2013 along with seventeen other trophies. However, Bayern have signed long term replacements last summer in the form of Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman, who has seen their playing time increase, so Robben will have to be patient before renewing terms.
Rummenigge echoed this point saying “Both (Robben & Ribery) will have to be patient for a bit. It is only normal to wait a bit longer with players who are older than 30.”
