The away side made the better start to the game, with Tommy Oar having the sides best chance, but the winger couldn’t beat Filip Kurto after being played through on goal.
Roda JC took the lead on 34 minutes, and it was their star winger Guus Hupperts who got the goal with a low strike which was too powerful for Utrecht keeper Robbin Ruiter.
Utrecht threw on new signing Juan Agudelo in the second half as they searched for an equaliser, but the American international could not inspire a comeback. Their best chance of the second half fell to Jens Toornstra, but his effort failed to trouble Kurto, who remained comfortable throughout the final moments.
It is now four losses in a row for Utrecht, and their slide down the Eredivisie table is set to continue, while Roda JC climb to 14th spot.
