The home side went into the game without a win since October but they were given a helping hand in the 18th minute when Jurgen Mattheij was shown a straight red for bringing down Mitchel Paulissen just outside the box. The resulting free kick resulted in the opening goal with Dani Schahin firing the ball past Warner Hahn.
With the man advantage, Roda JC dominated and they found the second goal on the stroke of half time with Paulissen heading in a cross.
On the hour mark, Thanasis Papazoglou fired in his first Eredivisie goal to make it 3-0 and moments later Paulissen added his second with a placed shot past Hahn.
The victory moves Roda JC above Go Ahead Eagles and into 17th at the bottom while Excelsior sit one place above them.
