Vlaar had hoped to train with Feyenoord, where he played for six years prior to a move to Aston Villa in 2011, but the Rotterdam outfit were not interested and ignored his request.
AZ Alkmaar, his first senior team has now stepped in and invited “Concrete Ron” to train with them. Should Vlaar accept their invitation, he would be unlikely to accept a deal to return to the club.
At 30-years-old, Vlaar will still hope to have a few seasons left of top flight football. Vlaar refused a contract renewal at Aston Villa last season, and the poor timing of a knee surgery has left him without a club since then, but he has been linked with both Southampton and Manchester United recently.
