Utrecht missed the opportunity to leapfrog PEC Zwolle into fourth place in the Eredivisie after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw.

The battle between fourth and fifth in the Eredivisie was always going to be a tight affair and the opening stages proved this as both sides cancelled each other out.

Just after the half-hour mark, Utrecht took the lead after a fine move which ended with Yassin Ayoub crossing for Sander van de Streek to net at the back post.

Soon afterwards, Utrecht nearly gifted PEC Zwolle the equaliser when goalkeeper David Jensen came rushing out of goal before colliding with Ramon Leeuwin. However, Willem Janssen got back on the line to prevent Mustafa Saymak’s lob from finding the net. Leeuwin was not so lucky, with the central defender stretchered off with concussion.

Younes Mokhtar missed a glorious opportunity early in the second half for the equaliser, while at the other end Gyrano Kerk hesitated when through on goal, which allowed Bram van Polen to make a last ditch tackle.

In the 83rd minute, Van Polen fired a long range effort at goal which Jensen parried, but only into the path of Saymak who hammered in the equaliser.

Neither side could find a late winner which means both sides remain where they were before kick off.
