Ajax remains seven points behind PSV Eindhoven after a slender 2-1 win over FC Twente in Amsterdam.

The hosts started brightly and took the lead after only three minutes when a swift counter attack ended with Justin Kluivert converting Donny van de Beek’s cross.

Ajax then missed several chances to double their lead as they laid siege to the FC Twente goal in the first fifteen minutes. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar also had a glorious chance on the half-hour mark, but was denied by Joel Drommel.

After the break, FC Twente grew in confidence and that led to the equaliser on 66 minutes. Joel Veltman lost a duel with Tom Boere and the striker set up Adnane Tighadouini to slot past Andre Onana.

The visitors were only level for five minutes before Hakim Ziyech went down in the box which led to a penalty kick. Lasse Schone made no mistake from the spot to put Ajax back in front.

Twente pushed for an equaliser before the end, but Ajax held on to earn three points and maintain their seven-point gap to leaders PSV. FC Twente sit second bottom.
