Feyenoord players Bart Nieuwkoop (19), Jari Schuurman (18) and Calvin Verdonk (18) will not be in the Netherlands under-19 team this July at the European Championship. Feyenoord wants to keep them in Rotterdam during the pre-season.

schuurmanBoth Nieuwkoop and Schuurman confirmed their absence at the Championship to Football Oranje after the Feyenoord reserves match last night at De Kuip, which ended in a 3-0 victory against reserve champions Vitesse. Nieuwkoop and Schuurman both scored once. Verdonk didn’t mention the tournament, but given the fact that all three players will be part of the first team next season, it would be very strange to see him go and Nieuwkoop and Schuurman not. Of the three, only Verdonk has a first team appearance, filling in for Lucas Woudenberg in the home match against NAC back in March. Nieuwkoop and Schuurman have yet to reach a match squad.

Ajax also keeps players at home
This makes it harder for U19 coach Aron Winter to assemble a squad with quality. Ajax coach Frank de Boer announced in a press conference last Friday that Riechedly Bazoer (18), Donny van de Beek (18), Jairo Riedewald (18) and Mauro Savastano (18) will be part of the whole pre-season, and the four will have to miss the tournament too. This means a promotion for Van de Beek and Savastano, as they started the season at the U19, but have already made appearances for the reserves and Van de Beek even made the first team squad at the home match against ADO Den Haag back in March. He stayed on the bench for 90 minutes.
