Bryan Smeets scored a last minute winner as Sparta Rotterdam defeated 10-man FC Twente 2-1.

FC Twente were hoping for a better evening in Rotterdam having lost 5-1 to Feyenoord last weekend. However, Sparta bossed the game from the start.

Only several saves from Joel Drommel kept the score at 0-0 heading into half-time. The goalkeeper’s finest moment was tipping Ragner Ache’s effort onto the bar and then over.

A few minutes into the second half, Sparta did take the lead when Halil Dervisoglu raced through on goal before slipping the ball past Drommel.

The lead only lasted three minutes before Calvin Verdonk equalised for Twente after Aitor Cantalapiedra’s strike landed at his feet in front of goal.

Drommel kept the score at 1-1 with saves from Lars Veldwijk and Dervisoglu but with six minutes to go, Twente were reduced to ten men with Julio Pleguezuelo seeing red for a rash challenge.

Sparta then sealed the victory through Bryan Smeets, who found the net with an excellent strike in the 88th minute. The win puts them up to fifth while Twente are now 11th.
