It is now official. Wesley Sneijder is not making a comeback as a football player.

After Arjen Robben came out of retirement to play for Groningen, Utrecht fans tried to convince Sneijder to play for them despite the midfielder being retired for two years.

Sneijder said he would consider it and was even set to train with amateur side DHSC to regain his fitness. However, Sneijder’s management has now confirmed to Algemeen Dagblad that the 36-year-old is definitely not making a comeback.

Frans van Seumeren, major shareholder of Utrecht, told AD, “I understand. It would have been quite a challenge for him to get fit enough and play at this level again. Especially now, because there is a nice selection now. It would have been nice, but I respect his decision.”
