Netherlands coach Danny Blind decided to leave Van Persie out of the squad for the friendlies with Wales (13th November) and Germany (17th November ) after stating the Fenerbahce striker isn’t fit enough.
This has led to numerous reports that the 32-year-old is now finished with the national team, despite Blind himself stating he would pick the former Manchester United star again if he can hit form for his club.
Speaking to AD, Wesley Sneijder has backed Van Persie to prove all his critics wrong and win his place back in the national team.
Sneijder said, “Van Persie should be part of the team if he is fully match fit, but it is not up to me to determine whether someone is fit or not.
“I was in a similar situation two years ago and there are two things you can do. You can either throw in the towel or you work your arse off and prove everybody wrong. I did the latter and I hope Robin will do the same.
“You are going through hell if something like this happens. First you lose the captaincy and then everything just seems to slip through your fingers.”
