The Premier League club tried to sign the midfielder in the summer, but Vilhena decided to remain in the Netherlands with his mother suffering from a serious illness. However the 20-year-old is widely expected to leave Feyenoord in the January transfer window with his contract up in the summer, and a reunion with his former boss Ronald Koeman at Southampton is definitely a possibility.
Koeman told Voetbal International “He is an interesting player, very young, but already experienced, with a lot of drive and power in his game,”
“You have to judge him in his age category and then Tonny is really very advanced. When I looked at the youth players at Southampton, there were few left-sided players with his speed. Unfortunately it did not work out (move in the summer).”
“I know Tonny – it has not been easy for him in his sporting and private life, but if I him see play, I see quality. He is strong, has a good running ability and a great left foot.
“Let me put it this way – the interest is still there, even if you rather think of next summer than this winter.”
