Netherlands women lost 2-0 to Spain in the Algarve Cup on Wednesday in what was a special evening for Sherida Spitse.

Spitse earned her 157th Netherlands appearance on Wednesday making her the record cap holder for Oranje Leeuwin.

The night wasn’t to end in a victory for Spitse and Netherlands, though, as Spain ran out 2-0 victors.

Atletico Madrid’s Jennifer Hermoso headed Spain in front after 20 minutes. Before the break, Lieke Martens came close to the equaliser but her shot came back off the post.

In the second half, Netherlands failed to find an equaliser and eventually Hermoso netted her second to seal a win for Spain.

Netherlands face Poland on Monday in their final Algarve Cup match. The tournament is being used as a warm-up for coach Sarina Wiegman as they prepare for this summer’s World Cup.
