FC Twente put the pressure on Sparta on Tuesday with their win over PEC Zwolle closing the gap between the two clubs to only one point at the bottom. Sparta needed a win to keep their chances of escaping the bottom three alive, while NAC knew a win would make them surely safe.
Both sides attacked from the start but Paco van Moorsel hit the woodwork for the hosts while at the other end, Paolo Fernandes fired just wide for NAC. Sparta were dealt a major blow before the break with Soufyan Ahannach removed from the pitch on a stretcher. It was later confirmed that the midfielder had broken his leg.
Just after the hour mark, the home crowd went wild as Deroy Duarte broke the deadlock for Sparta with a fine curled effort. However, the joy only lasted 12 minutes before Umar Sadiq equalised for NAC.
The game was heading for a draw but in the 85th minute, Stijn Spierings met a low cross and fired into the bottom corner to make it 2-1 and seal a vital win for Sparta Rotterdam.
Sparta remain 17th but are now only three points behind NAC and safety with two games left. The win also all but relegates FC Twente, who are four points adrift in last place.
