The Rotterdam side started their campaign with a difficult 3-1 defeat against Ajax, but they found themselves ahead against PEC Zwolle five minutes before the break after Loris Brogno slid the ball into the bottom corner after a clever backheel from Stijn Speirings.
PEC Zwolle went searching for the equaliser after the break and they thought they found it when Dirk Marcellis found the back of the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Anass Achahbar then saw an effort well saved by Roy Korsmit as the home side began to take control. However, on 58 minutes Sparta found their second goal with Craig Goodwin firing a deflected strike into the far corner.
There was to be no comeback for PEC, despite the introduction of Hachim Mastour and just before the end Brogno sealed victory for Sparta with a composed finish from close range.
Sparta Rotterdam record their first Eredivisie victory since February 2015, while PEC Zwolle are still searching for their first win of the season.
